The D3 is viewed by the author as a calculated attempt to minimize the Alpina content delivered to be able to achieve the most competitive possible price. This means that engine modifications are quite restricted and only the standard 320d manual gearbox is available. Some technical details about the engine are provided.

Some references are made to the 1998 Nürburgring 24h win by Andreas Bovensiepen with a 325td as well as the LeMans 24h win by the Audi R10 TDi.

The testdrive of the D3 impresses the author as it's almost as quick as the 330i. The suspension is extremely impressive as it's so dynamic yet comfortable.

The prediction is made that the UK sales target for the D3 of 100 units/year will be easily met.
