  • Introduction

When the E21 3-series was introduced in 1976, Alpina offered the C1 2.3 with a 6-cylinder engine. It had a 170 bhp engine with performance equal to the A4/3, however the C1 2.3 had considerably greater refinement.

Even after BMW started offering the 323i – similar in concept and performance to the C1 2.3 – there was still a market for the C1 2.3. This was due to the initial significant delivery times for the 323i.

The C1 2.3 proved so successful for Alpina, that the concept of the small-block 6-cilinder engines was further developed in the E30 3-series with the C1 2.3/1 and following models.
