  • Introduction

At Geneva 2008, Alpina introduced the D3 BiTurbo as replacement for the D3. The D3 BiTurbo is based on the 320d and it perfectly fills the niche between 325d and the 330d. The introduction was based on the E90 Coupe version – the D3 BiTurbo Coupe was the first diesel Coupe from Alpina.

After the E90 facelift in October 2008, the D3 BiTurbo also became available as Limousine and Touring.

Production of the D3 BiTurbo continued until the end of the BMW E90 lifecycle. Production of the D3 BiTurbo sedan was finished in 2011, the touring version ended in 2012. The coupe version was available until 2013.

    Engine/Gearbox

As with its predecessor, the D3, Alpina again chose one of BMW’s turbocharged four-cylinder engines as the basis for their model. That engine is the latest generation BMW diesel engine from the 123d – which is not offered by BMW in the 3-series.

The modifications are a larger Garret turbocharger, larger injectors, larger intercooler and a modified engine management system. Uncharacteristically for Alpina, the engine internals are not changed. This increases power to 214 bhp and 450 Nm. Already from 1500rpm the engine has 400 Nm.

There are 2 gearboxes available, the ZF GS653DZ six-speed manual and ZF 6HP19TÜ six-speed Switchtronic. For the manual version the BMW Start-Stop-Automatic is available.

    Suspension/Brakes/Wheels

The wheels are 19-inch with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires, 235/35 at front and 265/30 at rear. There is a choice between Alpina Classic and Dynamic wheels.

    Interior/Exterior

The D3 BiTurbo undergoes the same exterior changes as usual with Alpina. That means a deeper front-spoiler and bigger exhaust tips. You can also have the deco-set and a rear-spoiler without additional cost.

    Performance

For the D3 BiTurbo, Alpina claims a 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds for both the manual and Switchtronic version. The top speed is quoted as 244 km/h.
