The R-series engines are based on the N55B30 twin-turbo engine from the 335i with 306PS (225kW) and 400Nm. In 2014, this BMW engine was winner in the prestigious International Engine of the Year awards.
The R2 engine was introduced in the F3x B3 BiTurbo in early 2013.
Modifications include custom Alpina engine block, cylinderhead, pistons, intercooler, exhaust manifold and exhaust. A custom oilpan is produced for the F30 B3 Allrad versions.
The crankshaft is sourced from the F2x M135i/M235i. Turbochargers and high-pressure fuel pump are sourced from the N54B30 engine. Extensive modifications are made to air intake, oil and cooling systems, complimented with parts from the 335i US Racetrack Package.
In 2015, BMW introduced the 340i with the new generation B58B30 engine. However, Alpina choose to retain the N55B30 as basis for the R3 engine. This engine was introduced in the F3x B3 BiTurbo LCI in early 2015.
Changes from the R2 engine include additional custom water and oil cooling for the turbochargers. An improved fuel system is sourced from the F8x M3/M4.
The R3/1 engine is introduced in the F3x B3 S BiTurbo and F3x B4 S BiTurbo in early 2017. Changes from the R3 include custom turbochargers and extensively modified air ducting. Additionally, engine management makes use of new firmware from BMW.
