The D3 signifies a number of new milestones for Alpina. First of all, this is the first Alpina to be completely assembled on the BMW production line. Also, it is the first time that Alpina launch a diesel model before gasoline models. The reason for the D3 is that the current focus in the 3-series segment is on performance and economy. This leads to 52% of all 3-series sold in Germany to be diesels - especially the 320d. The modifications made by Alpina to the 320d engine are changing the standard Mitsubishi turbocharger to a Garret unit, larger chargecooler, larger intake valves and a modified engine mapping. The performance of the engine is very impressive. Also, the sporty but comfortable suspension is praised. The conclusion is that the D3 is quite a bit more expensive than the 320d, however when the options are taken into account it's actually quite a deal. Once that becomes common knowledge it will become very busy at Alpina. |
